Reaching Dreams

Two years ago, as part of a transition to school, one pupil told us his dream was to go on an aeroplane. We love ambitions and dreams at Banks House School! We explained to both pupils all the work that would need to take place before that dream could happen. He, along with another pupil, have been busy: practising travelling as a pedestrian, using a bus, using a train, visiting shops, meeting and greeting people, planning routes, using maps and bus apps, ensuring great time management, sitting and focusing on a task for increased amounts of time, fundraising, using a spreadsheet to keep track of the money. They have learnt basic first aid, how to be safe when travelling, stranger danger, and developed their awareness of risks and dangers around them. They have cooked and tried different foods, expanding their exposure to tastes and textures. They have encountered various problems and learnt how to overcome these. They have developed their social and communication skills. Last year, they went on their first residential trip to Butlins, staying away from home for 2 nights.

They have been busy fundraising with car washing and cake raffles. We had a very ambitious target of: £1,696 to fundraise for 2 pupils and 2 staff. I am pleased to announce that with the collective efforts so far, we raised all of the money!

On 18th May 2026, two pupils and two staff began their adventure to Stansted Airport. They overcame fears and anxieties of flying and being away for 4 nights. They engaged in activities that they have not participated in before: foam party, waterslides and visiting Benidorm beach. As the week progressed, they became more independent. They were so tired by the end of the day that they had to be woken up each morning! We are so proud of their accomplishments and the wonderful memories of their first residential abroad.
