Overview

Job Title: SEND School Nurse

Reports to: Health & Wellbeing Manager

Main Purpose: Develop and lead on health initiatives, early interventions and building therapeutic relations with the children and young people who attend Felix House School and Residential Children’s Home.

Location: Felix House School, Hull

Working Hours: Monday - Friday, 40 hours a week

Salary: £32,000 - £34,000 (full time) 

Role Specific Duties

● Work with children and young people, families, and partner agencies to address the Physical and emotional health and social needs of pupils, developing and maintaining individual healthcare plans.

● Following healthcare plans to maintain their access to education.

● To work with and be supported by a Lead School Nurse with strategy and approach.

Whole School & home Organisation

● To work across both school and children's residential homes ensuring consistency with approaches.

● Support teaching and support star with healthcare procedures for children and young people with significant health needs.

Health, Safety and Discipline

● Conduct initial health assessments for children and young people prior to school and home entry, identifying necessary professional services to ensure holistic care and enable school attendance.

● Instigate and assist with medical reviews, liaising with professionals, Community Paediatricians, Physios, Occupational Therapists, Dieticians, Speech and Language Team, Community Nurses, and Social Workers. Contribute to the EHCP process and attend EHCP reviews, MDT, TAC, CLA, ,PEP and CIN meetings as required.

Professional Development

● Maintain compliance with mandatory Cascade training

● Access training appropriate to role to ensure up to date practice and continuous professional development

● Maintain yearly registration with the NMC through the 3 yearly revalidation process

Communication

● Develop and support the team to provide a trauma informed therapeutic model, including training, to provide the children and young people with the pathways that are nurturing progressive and appropriate.

● Communicate effectively with colleagues, children and young people, families and carers, both verbally and in writing, using appropriate case notes and record-keeping practices.

● To work with and be supported by the Health and Well being lead and in house therapists

Personal and Professional Conduct

● Maintain professional standards in line with the NMC code of conduct and the Cascade values

● Understand and act within the statutory frameworks.

● Safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people, following the school’s policies and staff code of conduct.

Qualifications and Experience

● This role requires a registered nurse with current NMC registration RGN or RMN and ideally a Specialist Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) qualification.

● Significant experience supporting special needs children and young people. In particular Children and young people with SEMH who have diffculties in managing their emotions and behaviour.

● Full UK driving license and own transport is desirable

Skills and Knowledge

● Good knowledge and experience of IT

● Excellent communication and engagement skills

● Knowledge of trauma frameworks and models

● Knowledge and skills in assessment frameworks eg, The Assessment Triangle and The Outcome Star

● Strong safeguarding knowledge, record-keeping, teamwork, and commitment to professional development are essential

● The successful candidate must be able to develop and implement care plans, make clinical decisions, support staff, work collaboratively and engage respectfully with stakeholders.

● Working knowledge of the Personal, Social, Health and Economic curriculum and The Healthy Child Programme

Personal Qualities

● Good problem-solving and judgement skills are also crucial.
